Our clients purchased the historic home for its convenient location and great neighborhood. The 1890s shingle-style home had many ornate details that added to its appeal. But after living in the house with three small children, the homeowners realized that the kitchen just did not work for them.
The kitchen had been previously remodeled in the 1960s and did not match the style of the Victorian era home. The layout of the room did not utilize the space. Plus, the storage was a source of endless frustration. The homeowners came to Red House for a solution. Our design team reconfigured the layout, added a large island, custom cabinetry, and updated the style to give the family the kitchen they needed.
Our design team started with a new floor plan to address functionality. We moved the sink and range locations, greatly improving the working triangle. The team also designed a large island to replace the smaller island. Because the new island ran vertically, it lengthened the room, whereas the smaller, horizontal island had cut off the available space. At just over 9 feet long, the walnut-topped island complete with an eating area made daily life with small children easier.
White Kitchen Cabinet Remodel In East Providence,ri
Removing the radiator in favor of a toe kick heater created more counter space. We designed better traffic flow with stepped cabinetry. The new cabinetry opened the space around the eat-in island. This design created visual texture and shadow lines for a more eye-catching aesthetic.
Classic French doors replaced the old sliders. New windows added more natural light to the space, photographed here on a snowy day, but feeling light as spring. The kitchen now felt more connected to the back deck and the yard, making the room feel larger. In warm weather, the French doors could be swung open and the family could dine al fresco.
Two hand-pulled Minaret pendants in crystal glass adorned the island. This Red House project was recently featured by Niche, a handmade luxury lighting firm from upstate New York. Their lighting was the centerpiece above our gorgeous, oiled walnut island top and custom inset cabinets. The Minaret pendant is gently hand-pulled to create a perfect teardrop shape on each piece. Their signature Crystal glass complements the kitchen’s neutral palette, especially the white cabinetry and marble countertops.
Kitchen Design In Rhode Island
Open shelving and custom cabinetry gave the homeowners the storage they needed. This client wanted an open, airy feel to the kitchen. She wanted to avoid any upper cabinets with solid doors. Prior to the renovation, the couple removed the doors to all the upper cabinets to eliminate as much of her dislike as possible. When Red House finally started construction, almost all of the doors had been left in the shed in the backyard.
Our design team achieved this open look without compromising on storage. Full-depth draws and corner cabinet pull-outs delivered more storage space than before. We designed a beautiful glass display cabinet as well. A neutral White Dove and Light Grey color scheme mixed with fun pops of red added a playful and vibrant touch to this stunning kitchen design.
The Red House team designed the kitchen to feel like an extension of the original home. We specialize in historic renovations just like this. Our designers made sure that the new style lines matched the original details of the Victorian era home. The new kitchen retained the beauty of the architectural details while incorporating modern conveniences like updated appliances. We even replaced the old tile flooring with beautiful hardwoods to match the rest of the first floor.
Rhode Island Kitchen Recent Updates (2022)
For the powder room, we demolished a homemade plywood vanity and wholly updated the half bath with modern fixtures. We added wainscotting to the walls to enhance the room’s design. Using the same neutral color scheme and flooring as the kitchen helped the overall design flow.
