Our Kitchen of the Year is up for any cooking challenge — built to take on weekday dinners and invite-the-whole-block feasts alike. The kitchen holds up to the demands of the eight-bedroom house it serves, says designer Jon de la Cruz of DLC - ID. It's intimate enough to host dinners for one or four people, yet spacious enough to have extended families cook together at Thanksgiving.
The color scheme that runs throughout, beginning with the Versailles-inspired black and white Hausmann tile, nods to the San Francisco home's history: The intent was for a classic black and white kitchen, like sea salt and black pepper. I chose Cornforth White and Off Black from Farrow and Ball for the walls, which gives the timeless combination a slight patina that fit the 100-year-old house, says de La Cruz. Look closely and you'll see the tiles are set off-center, which makes the room feel more casual.
The focal point of the grand space is the center island: It's topped with Caesarstone quartz (a heat-, scratch- and stain-resistant go-to for kitchens), so the entire surface serves as a prep space. Within the island sits dual DXV sinks beneath GROHE faucets, including one that offers filtered water straight from the spout.

When a space has tall ceilings, you need a little drama up high, too. Partnering with an artisan, de la Cruz designed the custom rack for maximum convenience — each pot is hung with its lid, so no need to dig through cabinets for its mates. Polished nickel globe bulbs by Troy Lighting intermingle for additional lighting, a must over an active prep space.

Every square inch of the kitchen's T-shaped footprint had to be considered and utilized, says de la Cruz. Shelving by Grothouse serves as a transparent pantry while the glass Blisshaus jars allow families to see what they have, use it and buy less, reducing waste while resulting in savings, according to the company.
Throughout the kitchen, there are a number of thoughtfully-designed hiding places for counter-hogging appliances. An appliance garage offers a clever solution to a typical countertop display, without having to lug something from storage or hunt for an outlet.

For a twist on the traditional in a San Francisco kitchen, designer Jon de la Cruz chose Caesarstone in honed Raw Concrete with a rough-hewn edge. Preparing restaurant-caliber meals for a crowd goes faster with Thermador's 60-inch Pro Grand range, which includes six burners, a steam/convection oven, an electric griddle and a grill. To add character to the space, de la Cruz used two finishes on the cabinets: weathered white oak, and Farrow & Ball's Cornforth White paint in Modern Eggshell. You see that kind of make-do cobbling together in old kitchens, he notes. The vent hood, which de la Cruz designed, is zinc with a blackened finish. The luminous backsplash tiles are an upcycled product from Fireclay Tile, which glazes thin bricks with a glossy coating.

The distressed bronze of the Altamont pendants from Hudson Valley Lighting echoes the grays of Thibaut's Treviso Marble wallpaper. De la Cruz extended the chunky 1¼-inch-thick Caesarstone counter up the wall to the base of the window to create a ledge.
